IL BIORIFUGIO - REWILDING A COSTA DIGIANO
Il BIOREFUGIO è il progetto di REWILDING di Costa Digiano.
Il cuore della nostra visione non è solo l’agricoltura biologica — ma il ripristino di ecosistemi.
La nostra storia è iniziata nel 2011, quando abbiamo acquistato i cinque ettari di terreno che sono diventati Costa Digiano. Il nostro sogno era creare una piccola azienda agricola biologica che potesse anche servire la terra stessa, coltivando la biodiversità e creando habitat.
Parti del terreno era stato coltivato in modo intensivo e il nostro primo passo è stato rigenerare il suolo nella parte alta dell'azienda agricola, seminando colture di copertura per risanarlo dai residui chimici e ricostruire lo strato di humus.
Dopo 5 anni abbiamo piantato la nostra piccola vigna e successivamente abbiamo iniziato il rewilding di alcune parti dell'azienda, in particolare sul lato ovest del vigneto, piantando alberi cresciuti da seme e permettendo alle specie autoctone di tornare: un progetto a lungo termine per creare una foresta per impollinatori, uccelli e fauna selvatica.

Ora, grazie ad una generosa donazione, abbiamo acquistato il terreno direttamente collegato alla nostra area di rewilding: un appezzamento di 1 ettaro attualmente coltivato in agricoltura convenzionale, in gran parte destinato a colture ad alto uso di sostanze chimiche come il grano.
Questo nuovo appezzamento diventerà il cuore del BioRifugio a Costa Digiano.
Questo terreno ci permetterà di espandere una zona ecologica connessa, invece di creare habitat isolati, formando un corridoio fondamentale per la fauna selvatica — inclusa la popolazione locale di lupi — affinché possa muoversi, cacciare e prosperare. Questa connettività è essenziale per mantenere sane le dinamiche predatore-preda, l’equilibrio dell’ecosistema e la biodiversità a lungo termine.
Questo nuovo appezzamento diventerà il cuore del BioRifugio a Costa Digiano.
Questo terreno ci permetterà di espandere una zona ecologica connessa, invece di creare habitat isolati, formando un corridoio fondamentale per la fauna selvatica — inclusa la popolazione locale di lupi — affinché possa muoversi, cacciare e prosperare. Questa connettività è essenziale per mantenere sane le dinamiche predatore-preda, l’equilibrio dell’ecosistema e la biodiversità a lungo termine.

Il terreno si svilupperà in diverse fasi:
🌱 Fase 1 – Recupero del suolo
Il terreno è stato coltivato con pratiche ad alto uso di sostanze chimiche. Inizieremo ripristinando la vita del suolo e ricostruendo lo strato di humus attraverso la rigenerazione naturale, la cover cropping e una ridotta lavorazione del terreno.
🌳 Fase 2 – Piantumazione di bosco autoctono
Pianteremo specie arboree e arbustive autoctone adatte a questo paesaggio, creando un habitat stratificato (chioma, sottobosco, livello del suolo) per sostenere uccelli, insetti, impollinatori e piccoli mammiferi.
🐝 Fase 3 – Zone per impollinatori e biodiversità
Aree fiorite e comunità vegetali diversificate sosterranno api, insetti, uccelli e mammiferi. Questo si collegherà direttamente con le nostre arnie e le aree già riforestate, rafforzando le popolazioni di impollinatori e la biodiversità complessiva.
🦌 Fase 4 – Corridoio faunistico e predatori apicali
Collegando questo terreno alle nostre aree già rinaturalizzate, creiamo un passaggio sicuro per tutta la fauna selvatica. I lupi, come predatori apicali, trarranno beneficio da questo corridoio, contribuendo a mantenere l’equilibrio dell’ecosistema, regolare le specie preda e sostenere una comunità naturale resiliente.

Ci vorranno molti anni per trasformare questo terreno in un bosco vivo, ma col tempo questo campo passerà da terreno agricolo gestito con metodi chimici a un ecosistema autosufficiente — capace di immagazzinare carbonio, trattenere acqua, prevenire l’erosione e diventare un rifugio vitale per la fauna selvatica.

THE BIOREFUGE - REWILDING AT COSTA DIGIANO
The BIOREFUGE is Costa Digiano's REWILDING project.
The heart of our vision is not just organic farming — but land restoration.
Our story began in 2011, when we bought five hectares of land that became Costa Digiano. Our dream was to create a small organic farm that would also serve the land itself by restoring biodiversity and creating habitat.
Parts of the farm had been farmed intensively and and our first step was to restore the soil on our upper slope by planting cover crops to heal the soil from chemical residues and rebuild the humus layer.
After 5 years we planted our small vineyard and then we began rewilding parts of our farm, especially on the west side of the vineyard, planting trees grown from seed and allowing native species to come back, a long term project to create a forest for pollinators, birds, and wildlife.

Now, thanks to a generous donation from our supporters, we have purchased the land directly connected to our rewilding area, a 1 hectare parcel currently under conventional agriculture, largely cultivated with chemically intensive crops like wheat.
This new parcel will become the core of the BioRefuge at Costa Digiano - The Kiron Advani wildlife cooridor
This parcel will allow us to expand a connected ecological zone rather than creating isolated habitat, forming a critical corridor for wildlife — including the local population of wolves — to safely move, hunt, and thrive across the landscape. This connectivity is essential for healthy predator-prey dynamics, ecosystem balance, and long-term biodiversity.
This new parcel will become the core of the BioRefuge at Costa Digiano - The Kiron Advani wildlife cooridor

The land will develop in stages:
🌱 Stage 1 – Soil Recovery
The land has been under chemical-intensive cultivation. We will begin by restoring soil life and rebuilding the humus layer through natural regeneration, cover vegetation, and reduced disturbance.
🌳 Stage 2 – Native Woodland Planting
We will plant native tree and shrub species suited to this landscape, creating layered habitat (canopy, understory, ground layer) to support birds, insects, pollinators, and small mammals.
🐝 Stage 3 – Pollinator & Biodiversity Zones
Flowering areas and diverse plant communities will support bees, insects, birds, and mammals. This will link directly with our existing bee hives and forested areas, strengthening pollinator populations and overall biodiversity.
🦌 Stage 4 – Wildlife Corridor & Apex Predators
By linking this land to our existing rewilded areas, we create a safe passage for all wildlife. Wolves, as apex predators, will benefit from this corridor, helping maintain ecosystem balance, regulate prey species, and support a resilient natural community.

Over time, this field will transition from chemically farmed land into a self-sustaining ecosystem — storing carbon, retaining water, preventing erosion, and becoming a living refuge for wildlife including pollinators, small mammals, birds, and large predators like wolves.
